Hiring in Mexico through an EOR: a buyer’s checklist

A US company hiring its first employee in Mexico needs a workable employment arrangement before it needs a platform shortlist. Start with the actual role, work location and reporting relationship. Then ask each provider to confirm whether it can support that arrangement in writing.

Validate the arrangement before comparing the fee

A country on a coverage map is a useful starting point, but it does not establish that every role or operating model is available. Give the provider a short description of what the employee will do, who will supervise them and whether work is remote or at a customer site. Ask its local team to identify any restrictions or conditions. A general sales assurance is less useful than an answer tied to your proposed role.

Four questions for the quote call

Who can employ this person for this role?

Request the name of the contracting employer and confirmation that your activities and work arrangement are supported. Ask who reviews eligibility before an offer is issued.

What must the offer say?

Ask for the proposed employment agreement, compensation schedule, language version and any employee-facing benefits summary. Resolve differences between your offer letter and the local contract.

What cash is needed before day one?

Separate refundable funding or deposits from service fees. Ask when money must arrive and whether payroll runs if a payment reaches the provider late.

Who owns the employment changes?

Ask who approves changes to job duties, place of work, pay and reporting relationships, and how those changes reach the employee.

A buying scenario

Suppose a US agency wants one Mexico-based operations employee. The useful comparison is between written proposals for that exact role, with the same salary assumption and start date. Comparing a generic contractor plan with an EOR quote would answer a different question.

Your next step

Ask for eligibility confirmation first. Once that is clear, compare fees and the first payroll funding requirement together.
